1970 was a landmark year for the Land Rover. This marks the year that the first Range Rover rolled out of a UK factory. Since then, the manufacturing of the Range Rover is going strong. Let’s find out some information on what’s been up with the RR since its debut in 1970.

The 1st RR, like some early versions of the Chicago Land Rover LR4, was pretty basic.  It was designed with vinyl seats and a plastic dashboard!  The idea was to be able to clean the inside by spraying it with a hose!   Can you imagine that, thinking about the current RR’s that are so luxurious?!?

Land Rover’s keep getting better and better.  The 2010 Chicago Land Rover LR4 is no exception.  With a spiced up interior and improved on and off-road features, this is one great ride!

I decided visit my Chicago used Land Rover dealer and take it for a little spin.  Let me tell you, my test drive was a lot of fun!  To start with, the interior is a lot nicer than the LR3.  The inside has been reworked.  The 2010 model’s inside is very luxurious, but still feels “down to earth”.  I really like the sunroof that has 3 glass panels.  I love the feel of natural sunlight flooding it’s way into the Chicago Land Rover!

As we all know, Land Rover’s are big and powerful SUV’s, but they are still fast.  The 2010 LR4 has a V8, direct injection engine that is also found in Jaguar models (they are owned by the same company, in case you didn’t know that!).  The engine is capable of reaching 375 Horsepower and can go from 0 to 60 mph in just under 8 seconds.  Not bad, for a large SUV!  The 2010 Chicago Land Rover also comes with 6 speed auto transmission and four-wheel drive!

As far as driving on paved roads, the are some marked improvements.  Land Rover has upgraded the vehicle’s suspension and steering, two very important aspects to smooth driving.  With these systems being redone, the LR4 has more overall control when driving.  Great for on and off road adventures!

Moving to the oh-so fun off road capabilities, maybe saving the best for last!?!?  The Terrain Response System is a great tool.  It will prepare the SUV for rocks, snow, mud and sand, to name a few.  What it does is prepare the suspension, brakes and powertrain for the settings that work best on each of these elements.  For example, the brake power needed for snow driving is going to be different than mud driving. The Land Rover knows this and the system makes sure the vehicle is ready.  This makes a driver more confident and capable to handle the harshest of off-road driving!

In 1947, the idea of a Land Rover vehicle was born.  It was just after the war and the technical director for Rover Vehicles, Maurice Wilkes, caught wind that people were interested in a military type 4 X 4.  So, in 1948 the very first Land Rover went on display at the Amsterdam Motor Show.  It was made of aluminum and the body paint was left over from a fighter plane factory.  It also had a lightweight chassis and four wheel drive.  In fact, a used Range Rover Chicago model from 2007 that I recently came across still had the 4 wheel drive.  I guess they got something right early on!

Ten years later in 1958, a new model came out.  It was easier to drive, but still a durable auto.  A new 2.25 L petrol engine was a part of the model.  This is the model that made Land Rover a worldwide brand.  Orders came in from all over the world for this Series II auto.  In fact, the orders were from 70 different countries.

Through the 1960′s and 1970′s the models sold at your Chicago used Land Rover dealer were building on the last.  In 1967, the transmission was updated, as well as new carburetors installed.  In 1970, Land Rover released a great model that had off road capability, awesome towing capacity, and hydraulic disc brakes on all wheels.
